05Universal waste

A straight answer on what is in that cabinet.

Dangerous to people and the earth. Let us help you protect both.

Start here
Ask before you assume. We would rather point you to the right route than collect something we should not.

The rule this page is written to

The cabinet nobody wants to open is the one that causes trouble, because nothing in it is certain. Some of what is in there travels as universal waste and some of it needs a licensed hazardous-waste route. Guessing is the expensive way to find out which.

It is the category most likely to be handled wrong, because nobody is sure what it is.

Two routes, and only one is ours

Universal waste, or licensed hazardous waste.

Our route

Universal waste, collected and transported.

We offer you peace of mind as we transport all universal wastes to a registered recycling facility.

Not our route

Material that needs a licensed hazardous-waste carrier.

Ask before you assume. Some material needs a licensed hazardous-waste route rather than the universal-waste route, and we would rather point you to the right one than collect something we should not.

What this is

The cabinet nobody opens.

Cleaners, solvents, aerosols, maintenance chemicals and other universal waste that accumulated in a cabinet nobody wants to open. Tell us what the labels say, or send a photo, and we will tell you straight whether it is something we take.

What this covers
  • Cleaning and maintenance chemicals
  • Solvents
  • Aerosols
  • Mercury-containing devices
  • Unknown or unlabelled containers (ask first)

The flagged line is not a hedge. Unlabelled containers get a phone call first.

Before we arrive

Leave it exactly as it is.

The instinct to tidy up is the one to resist here. Consolidating two half containers into one makes a new mixture that nobody has a label for.

  • 01Leave everything in its original container. Do not consolidate, decant or top anything up.
  • 02Photograph the labels, including the ones that are half gone.
  • 03Set unlabelled containers aside, and do not open them to find out what they are.
  • 04Keep the area ventilated and everything away from heat.
What comes back

Named, dated, filed.

Certificate of Recycling

The document that says the material was recycled and names where it went. It is the piece an inspector or an auditor actually wants to see.

Disposal paperwork for the file

The proper paperwork and certificates verifying environmentally responsible disposal, made out to the business that generated the material.

Source · their archived About page, near verbatim

Electronic copies

We take care of the paperwork and make sure you have electronic copies, so the record is not one sheet of paper in one binder.

Gem City collects and transports. The processing facilities are separate registered operations, and the certificate names where the material was delivered.

One question, and we can size it

What the labels say, or a photo of them. If there is no label, tell us that. Unlabelled is something we can work with. A guess is not.

Dangerous to people and the earth

Send a photo of the labels.

The cabinet is empty, everything went out on the right route, and you have the record to show it. You get a straight answer on whether it is ours, and where it should go if it is not.
